Running pace, speed and distance

The running section is designed for practical calculations and clear explanations. Start with a related tool above, then use the guidance below to understand its assumptions.

Pace and speed are different units

Running pace expresses how long it takes to travel one kilometre or mile. Speed expresses distance per hour. A runner completing 5 km in 25 minutes averages 5:00 per kilometre and 12 km/h.

Use consistent distance units

Choose kilometres or miles before comparing training runs. When converting, one mile is approximately 1.60934 kilometres. A race-time estimate is meaningful only when the same distance units are used throughout.

Practical limitations

GPS errors, hills, weather, pacing changes and stops can influence actual results. A race predictor is an estimate, not a guarantee. Use a series of training sessions and sensible recovery rather than relying on one number.

Frequently asked questions

Is lower pace better?

A lower minutes-per-kilometre or minutes-per-mile value indicates faster running.

Can a calculator replace training advice?

No. It supports planning but cannot assess injury risk or individual medical circumstances.
